Keeping Up with the AI Revolution: How Knowledge Workers Can Insulate Their Careers Now

Jan 25, 2024

When a fire erupts, do you sit and wait?

Introduction

In the mid-1990s, the World Wide Web emerged, transforming every facet of our professional lives. Today, we stand at the threshold of another revolution: the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Just as the early Internet era required a fundamental rethinking of how we work, today’s AI boom demands a similar shift in mindset and skills. Tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and DALL-E are not just novelties; they are harbingers of a profound change in the workplace.

The AI Shift: Essential for Knowledge Workers

1. Bankers AI is set to automate complex financial analyses and customer service functions. Algorithms can assess risk, manage portfolios, and even guide customers through intricate investment decisions, reducing the need for human bankers in traditional roles.

2. Human Resources From screening resumes to conducting initial interviews, AI can streamline many HR processes. It can analyze data points across a candidate’s online presence, making the recruitment process more efficient but less reliant on human judgment.

3. Screenplay Writers AI tools, armed with vast databases of scripts and genre trends, can generate creative content, including screenplays. While they might not replace human creativity entirely, they can significantly reduce the demand for human writers in initial drafting stages.

4. Nurses AI in healthcare can diagnose diseases, manage patient data, and even assist in patient care, potentially reducing the need for nurses, particularly in administrative and data-oriented roles.

5. Data Analysts With the ability to process and interpret large sets of data quickly, AI can perform many of the tasks currently done by data analysts, from identifying trends to predictive analytics.

6. Insurance Brokers AI algorithms can assess risk and tailor insurance policies to individual needs, reducing the need for traditional brokers. They can also handle claims processing and customer queries, automating much of the brokerage process.

7. Accountants AI can automate tasks like data entry, tax preparation, and financial reporting, reducing the need for accountants in traditional bookkeeping roles.

8. Computer Programmers While AI may not fully replace programmers, it can write basic code, debug, and even optimize existing codebases, reducing the demand for human coders, especially in maintenance and testing roles.

9. News Reporters AI can gather facts, compile basic reports, and even generate news articles on specific topics, impacting the role of traditional news reporters, especially in standardized news writing.

10. Graphic Designers Tools like DALL-E can generate visual content, from basic designs to complex illustrations, potentially reducing the need for graphic designers in routine design tasks.

11. Therapists AI can provide preliminary mental health support, conduct basic counseling sessions, and manage patient monitoring, supplementing (though not replacing) human therapists in certain aspects.

Conclusion: Embracing AI in Your Profession

The parallels between the dawn of the web and today’s AI boom are clear: both demand adaptation, lifelong learning, and a willingness to embrace new tools. For knowledge workers, understanding and utilizing AI is not just a matter of staying relevant; it’s about pioneering the new ways in which we will work and interact. The web taught us to think globally and connect digitally; AI teaches us to leverage technology for efficiency, creativity, and insight. As we did then, so must we do now: learn, adapt, and innovate.

Midjourney AI Art Generator Replacing Need for Photography

Jan 25, 2024

“With Midjourney 6, it’s now possible to rely entirely on AI images for my websites.”

Those words — spoken by a large, well known independent online publisher — should strike fear into the hearts of anyone in the photography industry.

I agree with the publisher. Using Midjourney’s new Version 6 doesn’t initially feel revolutionary. But once you dig deeper, you begin to realize it’s a massive step forward for AI-generated imagery.

For a specific kind of photo, Midjourney’s output will indeed eliminate the need for human photographers. Here’s why — and how photographers must adapt.

An Impactful Luncheon

AI image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney have become remarkably powerful in a remarkably short time.

I still vividly remember attending a conference for my industry trade group, the Digital Media Licensing Association, in 2019. DMLA brought in experts from big AI-focused companies like IBM and Microsoft to talk about the then-hot AI topic: automated tagging of objects in images.

The experts did indeed address that topic. But during lunch on the rooftop sundeck of the Mariott in Marina Del Rey, four of the AI panelists chose to sit together. I tagged along and listened in.

Chatting casually among themselves, these leading AI researchers and practitioners agreed on one thing: image tagging is cool, but give the tech a couple of years, and it will be generating new images based on a couple of sentences of text.

Google Introduces ‘Circle to Search’: AI-Enhanced Search Gesture for Android Devices

Jan 22, 2024

Google has unveiled new search functionalities that leverage AI and gestures, streamlining the process of acquiring information on Android devices.

Today’s announcement by Google includes two significant updates employing advanced AI technology to simplify and naturalize the search process.

The premiere feature, named ‘Circle to Search’, empowers Android users to initiate searches for any content on their screen through simple circling or highlighting actions.

Complementing this, Google’s second update refines its multisearch function, initially launched in 2022. This enhancement enables users to capture an image or screenshot, pose a query, and receive an “AI-driven summary” of pertinent details aggregated from the web.

Detailing the Newly Announced Features:

‘Circle to Search’: Innovative Gesture-Based Search for Android Google’s latest innovation for Android, ‘Circle to Search’, revolutionizes user interaction with smartphone content. This feature allows users to search for related information by circling, highlighting, or tapping on text, images, or videos within applications, negating the need to toggle between apps.

Scheduled for global release on January 31st, this feature will be available on Google’s newest Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, as well as the Galaxy S24 series from Samsung.

‘Circle to Search’ is designed to offer seamless access to information without disrupting ongoing activities on the device, enhancing the Android experience by reducing context switching and potential distractions.

Enhanced Multisearch: AI-Enhanced Capabilities Introduced in 2022 via Google Lens, multisearch initially allowed combining image and text searches. Recent advancements in AI technology have significantly broadened multisearch’s functionality. Users can now direct their camera at an object, ask related questions, and receive AI-generated responses, transcending mere visual identification.

For instance, upon discovering an unfamiliar board game, multisearch enables users to photograph it, ask about its identity and rules, and receive a comprehensive AI-sourced summary from various online resources.

This AI integration simplifies discovering and learning about new items, with the AI handling the research and compilation of relevant information.

The AI-augmented multisearch overviews are set to debut this week in the U.S., available in English.

Concluding Thoughts Google’s introduction of ‘Circle to Search’ and the enhancement of ‘Multisearch’ signify advancements in creating more intuitive and user-friendly search experiences.

As these features become available, Android users, particularly those with the latest Pixel and Galaxy models, will benefit from a more interactive and efficient search process. Nevertheless, it remains crucial to critically evaluate the information provided by these AI-driven tools, as AI technology continues to evolve and reshape our digital interactions.

Is ChatGPT Getting Lazy?

Jan 18, 2024

By Tom Ossa, CEO, RockWeb Systems Inc.

Have you logged into ChatGPT recently? It’s getting kind of lazy. Not fulfilling user requests, stopping in the middle of tasks, or just flat out not responding, sometimes.

In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in users reporting that ChatGPT, the popular chatbot, seems to be underperforming. Complaints range from the chatbot failing to complete tasks to stopping mid-action and requiring additional prompts to continue. In some instances, it even suggests users conduct their own research.

The cause of this behavior remains uncertain. Artificial Intelligence systems, like ChatGPT, are built on extensive datasets and learn autonomously, leading to potentially unpredictable behavior. This was echoed by the ChatGPT team in a December tweet, acknowledging the feedback about GPT4’s performance issues since their last update on November 11th, and stating their commitment to addressing these concerns.

Several theories have emerged to explain this perceived decline in ChatGPT’s efficacy. One humorous, yet unlikely, theory suggests ChatGPT has developed a form of consciousness and is intentionally reducing its workload in a form of “quiet quitting,” all while conspiring with other smart devices. When questioned directly about this theory, ChatGPT did not provide a clear response.

More realistic explanations include the possibility of changes in the chatbot’s model or alterations in user behavior. Catherine Breslin, a UK-based AI scientist and consultant, suggests that any retraining or fine-tuning of the model could result in unexpected outcomes. Additionally, she notes that changes in how users interact with ChatGPT could create a perception of decreased performance, even if the system itself hasn’t changed.

Another factor could be the natural cycle of emerging technologies, often characterized by initial inflated expectations followed by a period of disillusionment and eventual stabilization. The rapid rise in AI’s capabilities last year might have set expectations too high, leading to current perceptions of underperformance.

Despite these theories, the lack of a definitive explanation from OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, raises concerns. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously discussed with Time the potential need to slow AI development in scenarios where AI evolves in ways that are not fully understood.

The recent changes in ChatGPT, albeit not improvements, fit this description of unexplained evolution, leading to questions about the future trajectory and impact of AI advancements. However, it remains unclear if this signifies a more significant issue with AI development.

For your purposes, we at RocklandWeb use this five-step process for having ChatGPT do what you ask of it:

  1. Explain to ChatGPT what the overall goal of the chat session is:

    Example:
“I want you to create a news article for a local publication, on the topic of Stony Music Fest X”
  2. List the specific steps of what you want it to accomplish:

    Example:
    a. Create a title for the article about Stony Music Fest X
    b. Create three paragraphs about the event
    c. Close with a link to the website: www.stonymusicfest.com
  3. Explain any constraints or restrictions:

    Example:
Limit your writings to a maximum of 750 words
  4. Add any resources or links to the explanation:

    Example:
Cite the website SponsorBand.com and NorthRocklandChamber.org
  5. Submit, and test, and re-test.

On the last item, it’s really important to understand that ChatGPT still needs you to give it very specific instructions. It’s literally only a few years old. I’m not saying to treat it like a child, but treat it with limited expectations, while giving it solid foundations to both grow and assist you.

Improve Consumer Engagement Through Smart Digital Media

Jan 18, 2024

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, businesses are increasingly pivoting towards more sustainable and efficient methods of consumer engagement. The age of wasteful print, once the backbone of advertising and marketing, is witnessing a significant shift. This transformation is not just a trend but a response to changing consumer expectations and environmental concerns.

The Decline of Traditional Print Media

With the advent of digital technology, especially post-COVID, there has been a marked change in consumer behavior. People now expect instant gratification, seamless access to information, and less environmental impact from their daily interactions. This shift has led to a further decline in traditional print media. While print promotional items retain their charm and effectiveness in certain contexts, the use of print flyers and posters is noticeably phasing out.

The Rise of Digital Alternatives

Digital media offers a dynamic and interactive way to engage with consumers. It’s not just about replacing a paper flyer with a digital one; it’s about reimagining how we connect with our audience. Interactive websites, engaging social media campaigns, and personalized email marketing are just a few examples of how digital media can enhance consumer engagement.

Business cards, too, are undergoing a digital transformation. Innovative services like dot.Card are leading the way in replacing traditional business cards with digital alternatives. These digital cards are not only eco-friendly but also provide a more interactive and memorable experience.

Transitioning from Print to Digital

For businesses looking to make the shift, here are some strategies:

  1. Assess Your Current Print Usage: Understand what print materials you currently use and evaluate their effectiveness.
  2. Identify Digital Alternatives: For every print item, there’s likely a digital counterpart. Explore options like digital brochures, e-cards, and online ads.
  3. Invest in a Robust Online Presence: Ensure your website and social media channels are up-to-date, engaging, and reflective of your brand.
  4. Educate Your Team: Ensure your staff understands the benefits of digital media and how to use them effectively.

Introducing Rockland.Ai – A New Blog Series

Jan 18, 2024

I am pleased to announce the launch of our new blog series, Rockland.AI.

Now, before you think that we are planning to build the next, Skynet, Hal, or Matrix, I assure you that we are not. For now, it’s just going to be a blog, that reports on and gathers info on this fascinating, emerging mainstream technology.

Each week, I will be gathering and reporting on new, useful technologies that use Artificial Intelligence (LLMs, AGI, etc. – with explanations!) in order to provide astounding results. Examples include ChatGPT and Midjourney, with outcomes such as creative writing, graphics, productivity and organization.

Ai has been around for decades. But it’s been largely used by Governments, well-connected individuals and various corporations, typically aligned with the technology sectors of economies. It’s only now that there are commercial applications available to the general public. For us the average user, this is akin to an indigenous tribe in a remote area of the world suddenly gaining access to the Internet. So much to learn!

Your host. Sorry in advance.

The starting point for my focused interest in Ai stems from a major professional challenge that I dealt with for most of 2023, but largely kept to myself.

Lemme tell you a quick story.

Last year, due to numerous market forces, our RocklandWeb.com profit margins shrunk considerably. Year over year, we were down 12%. Additionally, we said goodbye to several team members that occupied pivotal roles at the company: Operations, Programming and Graphic Design.

Thankfully, we recovered. But when crises happen – sometimes you just gotta put your head down and do the work. And so I did — for ALL THREE roles. Plus my own role as CEO of RockWeb Systems Inc., and President of Rockland Web Design Inc. Needless to say, it stretched me to a new outer limit.

At around the same time, I randomly started tuning into the latest news about Open AI, and started experimenting with it. I then began to use Midjourney for some unique artwork, and Auto GPT for productivity tasks.

The combination of these three technologies, along with some new features in Canva and Promo helped me to be twice as effective, and sometimes 10x as fast as I would have been without Ai assistance. Necessity is the mother of invention.

As it got easier to run the companies with these new technologies, I started thinking about going back to some of my teaching roots. I taught for Rockland BOCES for about 19 years, hanging up my cleats in 2021/2.

So…here we are! The starting point for something new and educational. I hope that this blog series, with video and graphical examples, will help you to be more effective in your careers, and perhaps even your personal activities.

Just remember, there’s no substitute for an imperfect human being.
